Mother Mother, Classified, and Kayo Rock the Hill at McMaster
Vancouver rock band Mother Mother put on an outstanding show at McMaster University on Saturday night, performing an impressive set featuring electric and acoustic solos by frontman Ryan Guldemond. They were a tough act to follow, but legendary Canadian rapper Classified took the challenge and ran with it, bringing down the house - or rather the hill - with an energetic performance opened by up-and-coming Canadian rapper Kayo.

Mother Mother began their appearance with Guldemond acknowledging the crowd’s patience, calling McMaster’s student body “a more mature breed of human being” compared to Vancouver where “a riot would’ve broken out.” They started with
Chasing It Down, the funky lead track off their latest album “Eureka”. They then played their hit single from the album, The Stand, before an energized herd of freshman, transitioning into the crowd-moving Body of Years from their 2008 album “O My Heart”. At one point fans broke into a chant of “You’re Hot! You’re Hot!” which Guldemond interpreted as “Shwarma? You read my mind! I could actually use a shwarma right now.” before breaking into the acoustic introduction of Wrecking Ball which the crowd eventually sang along to.

Kayo opened Classified’s performance, getting the crowd amped up with inspirational lyrics flowing over a smooth beat, emphasizing the truth in the saying “a dream is a destiny”. Mentioning that he “just turned 22”, he most definitely has a great career ahead - he energized the audience and got them physically involved during the entire performance. With impeccable clarity, powerful stage presence, and respect for both his mother and his home of St. Lucia, Kayo showed off his “island flair” with humility and was impressive to say the least.

A narrator introduced Classified and emphasized his prosperity in his home - the underground. He then brought the energy, getting the crowd up with Desensitized from his latest album “Handshakes and Middle Fingers” before Find Out from his 2006 album “Hitch Hikin’ Music”. Claiming “since the 80s this hip hop thing basically raised me”, Classified is true to his hip hop roots, an “emcee first, business last”. Classified paid homage to his home of Halifax while poking fun at its stereotypes with the fiddle-inspired The Maritimes from his 2005 album “Boy-Cott-In the Industry”. He then channelled that energy into the soft and smooth new single The Day Doesn’t Die which kept the crowd moving.

For the second time during his set, fans began the “You’re Hot! You’re Hot!” chant, to which he revealed, after asking a single fan to tell him what the crowd was saying, that he was flattered but also a bit scared, referring to the abundance of males at the concert. He performed his hit That Ain’t Classy, the first single from “Handshakes and Middle Fingers”, and then brought an enthusiastic young lady up on-stage to sing the motivational All About U  from “Hitch Hikin’ Music”. Knowing every word, she impressed Classified himself. It was no doubt the memory of her frosh week, as Hillary got fully into it, truly letting the the crowd know that “life is what you give”. The Canadian rapper ended the show with Oh...Canada, an ode to the country from his 2009 album “Self-Explanatory”. Moving the crowd from start to end, Kayo and Classified put on a show to remember, exemplifying why they are indeed true emcees and worthy of praise on a bigger stage.

Before the show, Mother Mother’s Guldemond and drummer Ali Siadat were kind enough to give an interview, providing insights into their inspirations, their views on the music industry, and advice for the younger generation. It was a mouthful - a slathering of inside jokes on a dry bun of humour with a generous portion of tongue-in-cheekiness.

An fascinating discussion is worth comment. I feel that you must write extra on this matter, it might not be a taboo subject but generally people are not enough to speak on such topics. To the next. Cheers

The following time I learn a blog, I hope that it doesnt disappoint me as much as this one. I imply, I know it was my choice to read, however I truly thought youd have one thing attention-grabbing to say. All I hear is a bunch of whining about something that you could fix should you werent too busy searching for attention.
