Young Canadian Jess Moskaluke a Step Closer to Stardom After Winning Country Music Competition
“She’s 20. That makes me mad.” exclaimed Charlie Major, the Canadian country music legend, receiving audience laughter while returning to the stage after performing Backroads to a standing ovation halfway through the 2011 New Artist Showcase during the Canadian Country Music Awards week. Hamilton’s own Marshall Dave commanded a huge reception from the crowd, and lived up to the hype with tremendous stage presence and an energetic voice. Libby McGrath held her own through charming charisma coupled with a strong voice and acoustic guitar skills. However none of them were enough to catch Miss Moskaluke, who’s vocal and songwriting talents, along with her modest beauty, were simply a cut above the rest.
Hailing from Langenburg, Saskatchewan, Jess stood a head above the rest, the only performer of the night to make the hair on my neck stand on end. Her success in the New Artist Showcase was no fluke. The eight competitors on Friday were narrowed down from 150 entrants, each submitting two original songs. Along with Dave and McGrath, five other rising Canadian country artists competed at the event: Ladies of the Canyon, Patrick Dorie, Josh Macumber, Stacey McKitrick, and Hayley McLean. Chad Brownlee then performed Love Me or Leave before Charlie Major returned to the stage yet again for an encore.
In a fitting end to the event, Mr. Major announced Miss Moskaluke the winner, seemingly passing the torch from his bright career on to one who is just beginning to shine. They were both stars on Friday’s stage, and one of them will soon be yet another young Canadian star on the world stage.
